Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an urban Title I school in northeastern Pennsylvania. What we lack in funds and materials we make up for with excitement and a true love of the arts. The majority of my students are Latino and with that, they bring a background and culture rich with visual art, music and dance. The art program allows them to express themselves and have experiences they normally wouldn’t have. This is especially important for those students who do not speak English yet.
My Project
We are in a 150 year old school that does not have a real art room or tools and materials needed for a complete art experience. Art is in the basement in a small carpeted room without a sink. That limits a lot of the art experiences we can have. We do not have a true art closet nor a kiln. Plus this room is shared with the music teacher. Once we put in the needed number of desks, you can barely walk around, but we are still very grateful to have our own space.
Students need to be able to translate from a 2D concept to a 3D object.
Working in clay allows them to do this, plus is a wonderful medium for hand-eye coordination. And clay is forgiving and easy to re-do if a "mistake" is made, although as far as I am concerned there are no mistakes in art just opportunities to do it in a different way.
With this air dry clay, students will be able to experience clay and make an actual item. The paint will allow them to color their work and the spray will permanently seal it. Although not kiln fired pottery, these pieces of art will be usable.
