Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"98, 99, 100!!" What first grader isn't excited about counting to that magical three digit number?? Help us harbor this enthusiasm and teach our students to love math!

The New York City public school we teach at believes in infusing hands on learning into the daily curriculum, and we teachers are always striving to find ways to make learning come alive for our students!

The Hemlock Class is an ICT class, a setting where students with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) and students without IEPs learn the same curriculum in a differentiated learning environment. Our first graders come to school full of enthusiasm for learning, and it is our job to harbor this energy and help them discover the world around them.

My Project

As an ICT classroom we have students with a wide range of abilities. Some may enter the school year working on learning their numbers below ten, while others may already be able to go beyond one hundred. The materials requested will help us provide hands-on learning experiences in math for all of our students. Teacher materials such as a "rekenrek" will enhance the clarity of our lessons, while student materials such as number bond cards and dice will allow students of all abilities to practice their skills with math games and group activities. Having such materials will help us differentiate our curriculum and mix hand on experiences in to the paper and pencil curriculum.

First grade is an integral school year because student's early school experiences often set the tone for their future attitudes towards learning.

By giving them hands on experiences at an early age we will not only be helping students to learn the necessary curriculum, but also helping them forge a life long interest in problem solving.
