My students are highly motivated Advanced Placement students in a small, rural high school where funding is limited. They are excited about learning, interested in the exchange of ideas, and want to have exposure to not only the classics of the literary canon, but to contemporary works of literary merit. Furthermore, the AP English Literature exam has been transformed to include works that are not only modern, but that are reflective of racial, gender, and cultural diversity.
We want to rediscover a love of literature through books that are more reflective of who we are as a classroom community.
This donors choice project will allow me to offer them high quality texts that do just that.
My Project
My students begin the year with an activity where they take a picture with their favorite book and then share with the class why this book is so special. Most of these books are from childhood and many report that they no longer enjoy reading because the books they read in school are old and lacking connection to their world today.
I want to offer a more relevant reading experience for students by creating a print-rich classroom filled with contemporary titles and works that are representative of diverse voices in order to spark student interest.
These works will still offer the complexity required of the AP Literature course, but through a modern voice. Ultimately, my hope is to increase student engagement and to increase the amount of student reading by offering more contemporary choices.
