This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every child needs a safe space to explore, interact, engage, and create. This is especially true of children living in vulnerable communities, and when children are expressing themselves through the arts. My classroom is the safest space possible for these budding artists.

My students are in middle school in an extremely low-income neighborhood.

They attend a public, government organized school where the staff and administration are extremely supportive of the arts, but there is no budget for supplies. The students have responded extremely well to visual arts and very much enjoy coming to class to create. We are trying to ensure that they have what they need to continue doing so.

My Project

My students are researching master artists and studying their lives/works. They will each choose an artist, research their life, study their work, write a report on their chosen artist, and then create a piece of artwork that is inspired by that person. Students will have freedom of choice in their selections, allowing them to gravitate towards artists that inspire them. Because this project literally spans all of history through the present age, my students will need a broad range of supplies and materials. They will be painting, sculpting, coloring, collaging, drawing, and anything else that they can convince me to allow in the studio.
