Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Most adults got sent off to school with a backpack, some lined paper and a fresh pack of pencils. While those supplies are still needed today, post-pandemic kids are weighed down by another item: the laptop and charger. Literally and figuratively, they are heavy to carry and easy to forget.

I'm trying to prepare my students for the modern work world, but I can't do that when their computers are dead.

Due to the cost of providing laptops and chargers for all students, our school cannot afford to buy many extra, and the ones they have are held in reserve for testing days (did I mention that now all testing is done online?). I am lucky to have a classroom with lots of electrical outlets, but it doesn't do much good without chargers. The most responsible students charge computers at home, and leave the charger there so it doesn't get lost (or borrowed permanently by another kid). The more typical students forget it in a classroom, and never find it again. Or somebody at home breaks it. Or they purposefully "lose" it, so they have another excuse to avoid the work we do in class. It only costs $15 to replace a charger, but with current rent prices here, many families honestly can't afford that charge, especially since all students in my class are bilingual, and many of their parents are immigrants.

A set of 50 chargers would allow me to keep a permanent class set of 30. I also would have some extra, to give away to students who genuinely need one. In addition, we still do need pencils for writing in our class notebooks! These chargers and pencils would keep my class working strong and getting them ready for modern life, at home, school and work.
