Modern American Tragedies: An in-Depth AP Lang Study (2)

Help me give my students an opportunity to read books about uncommonly studied modern American tragedies.

This project expired on September 6, 2025.

My Project

In AP Language and Composition, we analyze multiple works for their appeal to an audience, but also observe the strategies that an author uses to convey their message.

For this specific project, students will borrow one of these books to learn about a modern American tragedy.

Students will analyze this book for the message and strategies the author employs to convey that message and appeal to a specific audience. They will this use these books to frame a research project and presentation connected to this tragedy.

I know that studying tragedy is not the most uplifting subject, but I also know that tragedy shapes a person and, in this case, a nation, so that we can, hopefully, learn from it, grow, and change as a result. There is so much to learn from the darker times that lead to a brighter future.

This is a project that has been on my list to complete for quite some time. Our school does not have the ability to buy multiple books to provide choice within this unit. For my teaching style and the structure of this unit, choice is extremely important for the students to "buy in" to the objectives. The benefit will far exceed my current students as we can continue it for years to come.
