My students need molecular models to help them understand the patterns involved in covalent and ionic bonding.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Material in textbooks is often abstract and difficult for students to assimilate. By building and playing with models of molecules, my students will greatly improve their understanding of the patterns found in the atomic world.
We are a rural school district in Central Washington.
All three schools are on a single campus, with about four hundred students at the high school. A lot of the students' parents are field laborers with limited proficiency in English. The percentage of students who qualify for free lunch is so high that it is cheaper to give all students free lunch than track the money from the ones who do not qualify. Approximately 80% of our students are Mexican.
The vast majority of the students appreciate the value of a good education and work to take advantage of what is being offered to them. They benefit immensely from hands on activities.
My Project
In this rural area, students are used to handling things. For many, it is the preferred form of learning. While textbook authors do the best they can to describe and illustrate concepts relating to atomic bonding, something extra clicks when students are actually able to handle models and see in three dimensions the molecules described in the book.
These models will help chemistry come alive for my students.
They will have access to the kinesthetic method of learning. They will understand that molecules are real three dimensional objects, and that considerations of space and shape apply down to the smallest levels of matter.
