Students who struggled with paying attention or staying awake were suddenly different people. They would come in and ask to have a snack, and then they perked right up. So many of them do not have adequate nutrition, so getting a good snack is very important. Some of these students are athletes, and by the time the last two class periods came around, they were so hungry. Now they are able to have a snack and go off to their respective sports. \r\n\r\nMy students were not only staying awake, but also smiling, engaging with others, taking notes, asking questions, and telling me they felt better because of the snacks! One young lady stayed after class one day and said the following: \"Mrs.____, those snacks help me stay awake and actually help me THINK! Thank you for providing those. I look forward to them every day!\"\r\n\r\nI am so grateful! My students are better thinkers, feel better about themselves, and are able to function and not fall asleep because of your generous gift of snacks! My students were so excited to get to choose between The Boys in the Boat, Unbroken, and The Alchemist. We are using these novels to read and discuss the indomitable human spirit. We also analyze the characters' development and how our responses to conflict shape who we become. Many students could relate to the characters in the novels regarding conflicts and challenges they personally have faced. Several students also could see how kindness, perseverance, determination, sacrifice, and love shape the outcomes of the struggling characters and are more powerful than anger or revenge. \r\nFor the first time in my high school teaching career (10+ years), I had high school students seek me out to ask me if they could read ahead. Some simply came up to me and said, \"I am sorry Mrs. I finished the book last night. I couldn't stop turning the pages.\" I couldn't be more happy!!! Students have found a love of reading and are excited to pick up books. We will finish our unit with a literary analysis showing how the human spirit can endure and be resilient in spite of conflicts. \r\nThank you so much for making this possible!","fullyFundedDate":1733377898704,"projectUrl":"project/current-books-for-current-students/8942364/","projectTitle":"Current Books for Current Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Eilers","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5221494"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_35666","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":594,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":83,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":14,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":85,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"25.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":49.1,"schoolId":35666,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Royal High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Royal High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/royal-school-district-160/royal-high-school/35666"}
