Modeling Mathematics

Help me give my students engaging activities in math centers. These materials will help reinforce the content we covered in the geometry unit and offer hands-on practice with upcoming units on place value, operations, and solving word problems.

My Students

We are a class of 17 bright and enthusiastic first graders. Every day, we look forward to learning new things, practicing skills, and using higher order thinking. We are active, inquisitive, and collaborative in our academic centers.

We approach learning with persistence and cooperation.

We value each other's strengths and work together to make sure everyone improves and excels. We learn from each other and add to our own perspectives in the process. We also keep a relaxed environment and look at life with a sense of humor.

My Project

The Geostix and pattern blocks will help the students compose and decompose two-dimensional shapes. Some of our students need more practice with this skill and all of the students will benefit from having the physical shapes to build with in order to solve higher order geometry problems. The number rods offer students another tool to use to find different ways of modeling numbers to twenty. The place value games reinforce the students' understanding of numbers to one hundred twenty. The math journals give daily practice with applying different strategies to solve word problems and give a general review of skills.
