This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My second grade students are resilient. Many of them experienced trauma and hardship as a result of the pandemic. School has been healing for them as they interact with their friends and their teachers. Last year, students learned how to use technology to access online learning as well as independent learning.
My students attend an inner city school in Southern California.
Most students come from families with limited resources and limited formal education. Despite this, students come to school ready to learn as parents have instilled in their children a love of learning. I am proud to have moved with them to second grade to continue our journey.
My Project
Students will discover what numbers look like by building their own representations with a partner. Students will be able to see what each digit truly represents by composing and decomposing cubes as they build their number models. This will help students learn about place value in a fun and creative way. Students will be able to accurately write the numbers in word form, standard form, expanded notation, as well as create a representation of their models. Students will be able to describe and share their learning with their peers. The magic of making a model is how easily students will be able to later understand what happens when two and three digit numbers are added and subtracted.
