My Students

My middle school is a wonderfully productive learning environment, despite the lower income status (60+% free or reduced price lunch program, 69% minority); our students excel in project-based learning, from robotics to 21st century journalism, to hydroponics, to community volunteerism, just to name a few!

My students are fascinated with the connection and repetition of historical and current events, especially when it comes to justice, liberty, human rights, and the American spirit!

Through my Master's in Learning and Technology, I have created an American History & Current Events Blog Project, integrating Language Arts, History, Current Events, and Technology to inspire students with real-life content as they learn researching, reasoning, and writing skills to meet 21st century academic expectations. So often, the public underestimates the ingenuity, capability and aspirations of my 8th grade students because state test scores say they are underachieving, but real life is not a state test! Life is an endless succession of personal projects requiring skills other than a multiple choice or short answer question. Chromebooks, Google Apps, challenging real-life research, along with reading & writing projects are the key to gaining the skills they will need for modern professional careers and thoughtful, balanced, fact-based political engagement!

My Project

With a class set of this hard-backed final novel of The Hunger Games series, my students can continue to hold a tangible book in there hands, turning pages and reading along to the narrated audio, boosting their reading level with high-interest content, while comparing the plight of Panem (a post-America autocratic republic) to modern autocratic democracies, such as Russia. The growing rebellion to the denial of civil liberties in the 13 Districts of Panem almost directly correlates to our original 13 American colonies rebelling against the unjust treatment of King George the III, and our fight to forge our current democratic republic of the people, by the people, for the people. Years past, generous donors gave to establish my class set of the first two self-titled books of the series, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. The level of student enjoyment from the first two books and their high interest in democratic government compels me to expand my integrated Language Arts/U.S. History curriculum to encompass and extend their experience and analysis of the entire novel series. Mockingjay will complete this experience and the finally to the opposition of an autocratic ruler suppressing the freedom of a democratic republic.
