Mock Grocery Store for the Sp. Ed Adult Transition Program
Help me give my students a mock grocery store in the classroom. My students are in the Adult Transition Program learning essential life skills, and creating an on-site grocery store will help prepare them for Community-Based Instruction.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Building an on-site Community-Based Instruction (CBI) grocery store in our special education adult transition program serves multiple important purposes. The goal of this project is to enhance life skills, foster independence, and provide vocational training for adults with special needs. By simulating a grocery store environment, students will learn essential tasks like stocking shelves, managing inventory, handling transactions, and interacting with customers. These skills will not only prepare them for real-world retail and customer service jobs but also boost their confidence and ability to navigate community environments.
The specific items I’m requesting, such as shelves, inventory, a cash register, and shopping baskets will make a tangible difference in their learning.
These tools allow students to practice hands-on skills in a realistic setting, making the learning experience more engaging and effective. For example, the cash register will help teach math and money-handling skills, while stocking shelves and managing inventory will promote organizational and task management abilities.
What makes my students special is their determination and unique way of learning. Many of them come from diverse backgrounds, including agricultural settings, and are now working to gain the life and job skills needed to become more independent. This project will support their growth by providing a safe, structured environment to practice skills they’ll use in everyday life.
