Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our Title I school has 600 students in Pre-K through fifth grade. They are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. Our school is 84% free and reduced price lunch and we have free breakfast for 100% of the student body. Each one deserves a dignified education. Unfortunately, many students do not have their basic necessities met outside of school.
My students do not let their socioeconomic status affect their desire for learning.
The students are eager learners and have a love for school, which for many is the only consistent part of their lives. Every day I learn more about their struggles, their hardships, and their courage. I attempt to foster an environment that helps each student feel comfortable, safe and enjoy learning.
The diverse life experiences of my students bring a unique atmosphere to my classroom and our entire school. There is never a day in which I am not in awe of my students lives, both good and bad. My students are excited to be at school. Our school offers the most consistent home many of them will have with their most consistent family.
My Project
My Fifth grade Engineering Team has a consistent desire to learn new STEAM applications. Our goal is to engage in hands on learning through designing and engineering principles. My students are highly engaged in these applications, as they work on projects growing out of their own imagination. Vex Robotics offers STEM Activities that increase our knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical programing! When children care deeply about the projects they are working on, they are not only more motivated but they also develop deeper understandings and connections to knowledge.
They will also practice gracious professionalism as each student learns to work as a team, and yet participates in a friendly competition.
During this construction they will learn about designing simple machines and motors including electrical wiring and simple circuits. Students will also experience the joys and frustrations of engineering principles. Valuable skills in working together with peers to accomplish a goal is gained on a daily basis. They will also practice gracious professionalism as each student learns to work as a team, and yet participates in a friendly competition.
We have a great need for a mobile cart to help us transport our robots, tools and backup parts when we go to competition tournaments. We have to physically carry many robot parts and containers into the venue; depending on the location of the competitions, the distance can be rather lengthy and it takes more than one trip to get everything that my team needs inside to the proper location.
