This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th grade students are eager learners with diverse cultural backgrounds. Many of my students are English language learners who bring enthusiasm and curiosity to every task, even the challenging ones. I work with many newcomers to the United States who have endured great obstacles to be here. It humbles me to see how much they value education and how they strive to succeed in a new land, language, and culture.
We perceive diversity as a strength to be harnessed and nurtured.
In my classroom, we often design lessons and activities around an inquiry model, so that all students are exposed to rigor, but at the same time can access content in meaningful ways.
At our school, we believe that a collaboration of families, teachers, and students is what makes our community resilient. We are always learning and evolving in our practices.
My Project
Our 5th graders follow a middle school model where they move to different classrooms for content instruction. This year, the reading, writing, and social studies teachers are collaborating to integrate units of study so that students can read, write about, and research historical topics in all subject areas. We have three classrooms of 30 students each that share 1 classroom library and a set of chrome books.
Having a mobile utility cart to house our texts and chrome books will give all three classrooms access to our resources whenever they need them.
We can simply roll the cart from room to room as needed. Mobility of resources is critical in our school since we often share materials among several classrooms. The cart will maximize instructional time and instill a sense of ownership among the students for their own learning.
