Typical is not a word I would use to ever describe the young students at my school. The student here have very diverse backgrounds and unique learning needs. Most of the students come from lower income neighborhoods within our city. Many do not have their daily life needs met at home so they come to school seeking normalcy and routine.
Because of their backgrounds, many of the students I serve have very little exposure to art.
It is difficult to fund field trip and extras with the budget shortfalls of today's education situation. Because of this there are fewer opportunities for young people to connect to art.
My Project
Due to budget constraints and lack of resources field trips can be difficult to arrange. I want to provide the entire school with an opportunity to experience amazing and relevant art without having to leave the building. I want host a Traveling Art exhibit featuring the works of Wyland.
Students and teachers alike will get up close with the select work of " Marine Michelangelo" famed environmental artist Wyland and giant murals of his vibrant Seascapes.
His art envisions the beauty of marine wildlife in bright vivid colors. Whales, dolphins and coral reefs will all be apart of this immersive display.
The display will be available for one week and teachers will be provided a supplemental packet so they can make classroom connections with the art in all core subject areas. It will be an exciting learning experience for the school as a whole as well a a beautiful display that will transform the halls into an art gallery.
