My students need access to headphones, dual language dictionaries, and other educational resources that will enable them to successfully acquire the English Language. Through the creation of a Mobile Resource Cart students will have accessibility to tools to bridge the language gap.
Our school is situated within the Urban Metropolis of Miami in Liberty City, which serves a lower-economic community with a high percentage of its residences living below poverty level. I have the pleasure of working with a dynamic group of English Language Learners stemming from 10 countries in grades 9 - 12. The majority of my students have been in the United States on average of 3 to 6 months, many of which do not speak our native tongue. These unique learners continuously put forth a willingness to acquire the English Language and have a motivation to learn.
My Project
My class is comprised of a unique culture of students who speak a variety of languages from 10 different countries. As an ELL instructor, I often face challenges when acquiring resources that provide evidence-based instructional strategies appropriate for language learners. Having the opportunity to purchase current resources will ensure I have engaging activities to provide optimal learning opportunities for my students to succeed. I would like to create a mobile learning station to include a variety of resources such as; language translation dictionaries in various languages, headphones to accompany computer-based listening activities, and a printer (ink) to ensure students have access to readily available printed material to accompany their electronic textbooks.
The mobile language station will serve as an engaging language-based instructional resource for students to aide in bridging the language gap from their native language to English.
Students will be able to access these materials on the cart during class, have the opportunity to "check-out" reference material, utilize headphones to accompany computer-based activities, and to print required documents needed for their assignments.
