Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, as we look toward the Common Core and the future of online testing, our technology resources are limited. My classroom has two student computers, one very outdated. My students need computers! We were able to get one iPad Mini in June through Donors Choose and clearly need more!
As the economy soured in 2008, the community my school serves suffered numerous foreclosures.
Our student population declined, as did our resources. Now as the 2013/2014 school year has begun, I find wonderful, bright children who need much. The percentage of students needing free and reduced lunches is over 50%, our PTA last year was unable to earn enough in fund raising to give anything to teachers, and I find few of my students buying books through book clubs. Rather than bemoan these changes, I want to face the challenge in a positive way! Bringing two more mobile devices into our classroom will do just that.
My Project
My students need one Apple iPad mini tablet and one Chromebook with safety cases and headsets so they can use them for all their reading practice. The days of 20 students in the primary grades have not returned, so with a current roster of 31 second graders I need ways to effectively teach to all. To that end, I am trying The Daily Five this year. My students have learned how to quietly Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, and now we are going to learn Listen to Reading. I plan to have students using the two classroom computers, the iPad Mini we got from our Donors Choose project last spring, and one other iPad to listen to a story on RAZ Kids, record themselves reading it, and take a quiz. However, with 31 students, we have a critical need for two more computers. The iPad Mini supports RAZ Kids and other apps. The Chromebook supports Superstar Online, giving my students additional learning opportunities.
Two more computers will not only give each of my 31 students time to practice reading, it will free me to work with small groups of students as each student rotates through The Daily Five literacy activities.
This means everyone gets better opportunities, this year and many to come! Your donation will make a real difference this year and beyond!
