My Students

I teach art at a small elementary school in Brooklyn, NY for students with severe disabilities. The students in my school are between five and eleven years old. There are thirteen 6:1:1 classes (6 students, 1 teacher, 1 paraprofessional) and one 12:1:1 class (12 students, 1 teacher, 1 paraprofessional).

Most of the students in my school have Autism Spectrum Disorder, but that doesn't stop them from being amazing and unique individuals.

My students are very social, they like playing, working and learning together. They thrive in an environment that is well organized and structured. They love art because it provides them with a visual voice.

My Project

I am taking over and re-vitalizing the Art Program at my school. For the past three years art has gone from room to room with a very tiny cart that is not conducive to teaching about Visual Arts or creating art.

The STEM Maker Station is the perfect cart to turn into an Art Studio on wheels.

The sign on the top of the cart is customizable, I will be able to decorate it so that when I enter the room, my students will know that it is time for art. The cart comes with an assortment of tubs to organize materials such as markers, crayons, colored pencils etc. With the addition of the small tubs and tub caddy, I will be able to organize all of my supplies and switch out what I need depending on the lesson. The stubby tub is the perfect size for holding free-choice drawing paper. The bottom of the cart is solid and flat making it the perfect safe storage place for days that we want to create 3-dimensional pieces. The open rack in the back is perfect for holding the portfolios of the classes that I am going to that day, allowing my students to work on bigger pieces and keep their artwork protected as I travel.

This cart will help to keep me organized as I travel throughout my day and improve the types of projects that my students are able to work on.
