Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Viewing chromosomes under microscopes, modeling with foam chromosomes, and drawing on whiteboards are great interactive activities that will lead to a more comprehensive understanding of mitosis and meiosis beyond what can be achieved through traditional methods alone. Active learning is effective at promoting retention, engagement, and supporting students with special language and academic needs.

Students will demonstrate our chromosomes in action as they model mitosis and meiosis through hands-on science activities: foam chromosomes, microscopes, and whiteboard drawings.

Mitosis and meiosis happen daily in our bodies, and yet this abstract concept is hard to visualize. By providing a variety of ways to demonstrate cells undergoing this process, I hope to spark my students' curiosity and STEM skills. Using foam chromosomes, students will help compare the microscopic and molecular scales of genetic information and compare the movement of mitosis to meiosis. I love the idea of using the chromosomes to discover the sources of genetic variation through independent assortment and crossing over. Using whiteboard drawing and microscopes, students with further visualize these abstract body processes.

My goals are for students to understand the purpose of mitosis and meiosis, their phases, and their connection to other biological concepts like cell growth and reproduction. I want them to see genes in motion and not static, as presented in a textbook. The visuals are especially helpful for my English Language Learners who are not only learning the science, but the language as well.

Problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity are among the top skills needed for the 21st-century job market. I want my students to be exposed to hands-on science education to develop these essential skills that make them future-ready.
