The rubber band car project was many student's favorite activity during their year in 10th grade physics. They got to test out different methods of powering a car to move using only a rubber band, popsicle sticks, straws, and bottle caps. One student that stands out to me is Isabella, who attempted five different designs before she finally was able to collect data that verified the effectiveness of her design according to client needs. She was sooooo persistent and simply refused to give up! The fact that we can materials provided for her to explore, experiment, test and engineer made such a huge difference in her learning experience. \r\n \r\nWhen the materials arrived the students were so excited they could actually bring their ideas to life! Students were suddenly determined to make sure they accomplished the goal of the build, which was to have a rubber-band powered vehicle travel over 2 meters. And many took on the extra challenge of having the car go uphill for that distance! Many students got competitive and sought to balance design optimization with their use of resources.","fullyFundedDate":1702571738345,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-future-engineers-physics-dri/8103986/","projectTitle":"Empowering Future Engineers: Physics-Driven Rubber Band Car","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Minjares","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9410360_orig.png?crop=322,322,x0,y75&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739060087104","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/msminjares"},{"teacherId":9701199,"projectId":8694234,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your gift of providing new and reliable scientific calculators for my teams of budding Science Ninjas. My school serves a population of students where ~90% are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and cannot afford calculators of their own. They have smartphones, but are not allowed to use them during tests and often struggle finding more advanced functions (especially since different phone OS have different layouts). This way, we all start on the same page and can find the keys and functions we need. That also helps my students support each other when their peers are struggling, since they are all using the same equipment.\r\n\r\nI wanted to make sure that these calculators felt special and could be easily assigned, so I hope you appreciate the \"Science Ninja Team Gatchaman\" theme I applied to them so that each student gets assigned a calculator and knows where to return them. I've found that the students treat the equipment with care, and make sure to return them before the end of the period.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for your generous gifts, and my budding Science Ninja students salute you!","fullyFundedDate":1725256436534,"projectUrl":"project/help-my-science-ninja-team-needs-calcul/8694234/","projectTitle":"Help! Your support came at a critical time when it seemed uncertain whether my students would have the necessary tools to stay organized and engaged in their learning. This school year began with significant budget cuts, leaving us unable to provide basic supplies like notebooks for our students. While I have done my best to fill some of these gaps out of my own pocket, the need far outweighed my ability to supply everyone. Many of my students come from families who face economic challenges, making it difficult to ask them to purchase materials.\r\n\r\nOur school serves a Title I community, with the majority of students being first- or second-generation immigrants. Your contribution has had a profound impact on these students, who are eager to learn but often lack the resources to do so effectively. When the notebooks and supplies arrived, the classroom atmosphere was filled with excitement and relief. \r\n\r\nThe impact of your donation extends far beyond just having a place to write. The notebooks have become an essential part of our classroom routine. Students use them daily to take notes, organize assignments, and prepare for tests and projects. For those who have struggled with organization and turning in work on time, the structured use of these materials has led to dramatic improvements in both their grades and confidence. Watching them take pride in their work by carefully gluing in materials, annotating notes, and reflecting on their learning has been truly inspiring.\r\n\r\nAs we approach the end of the semester, these notebooks have become not just tools, but evidence of their learning and growth. Students can look back at their entries from the beginning of the year and see their progress in writing, critical thinking, and understanding complex government concepts. As we transition to economics, these notebooks will continue to play a vital role in helping students tackle challenging concepts, visualize graphs, and practice their writing and language skills. Especially for my English learners, these notebooks have provided further support as they learn both the content and language at the same time. These notebooks provide a tangible reminder of their hard work and perseverance, which is invaluable.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has had a ripple effect. It has lightened the burden on me, allowing me to focus more on teaching and less on scrambling to find resources. It has also shown my students that there are people in the community who care about their success. This message of support and encouragement is just as impactful as the supplies themselves. Thank you for empowering my students and showing them that people believe and value their educational journey. \r\n\r\nThank you again for investing in my students' education. Your kindness has truly made a difference, and we are incredibly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1724780815570,"projectUrl":"project/notebooks-for-seniors/8622407/","projectTitle":"Notebooks for Seniors","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Landini","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9069571_orig.jpg?crop=1073,1073,x282,y168&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754509342425","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9069571"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_36535","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1871,"numTeachers":81,"percentFrplEligible":84,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":88,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"23.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":81.6,"schoolId":36535,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Orange Glen High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Orange Glen High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/escondido-union-high-school-district/orange-glen-high-school/36535"}
