Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students often have difficulties imagining how math applies to real-world situations outside the classroom. If they could learn to see math in the world around them, then it would allow my students interest in math to soar.
I teach 5th grade to an amazing group of students.
I learn as much from them each day as they learn from me. They are interested in learning and they allow me to help push them in learning beyond where they thought they could go. I teach in a high-poverty area where most of my students rarely travel outside the city in which they live. My school had a lot of dedicated teachers although the school and its parents often lack the ability to provide our students with all of the resources we would like to be able to give them.
My Project
The Dynamath Scholastic magazines will enhance my students understanding of math. When I have engaged my students in math problem solving I have found that my students have difficulties applying mathematical processes to real-world situations. The articles in the Dynamath magazines are both intriguing to students and they connect math with the world outside the classroom. Also, the magazines would allow my students, many of whom are struggling readers, to incorporate language and reading into math class.
I have seen a lot of growth in my students, but I know that they can go even further.
I remember having regular access to supplemental magazines like these when I was in school and it is unfortunate that my students have not been able to have the same access. To see the excitement in my students when they know that they have a magazine coming to them in the mail would be such a great gift for them to receive.
