My Project

My students are curious and creative and love to design and build. Most of my students are Native American (78%) and live in poverty. Due to our area's poverty, all our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.

As a former student and now teacher in this school, I have seen and understand their everyday struggles.

In our small district, providing for our students as they face many of these struggles can be difficult. Every day we have to help push them to succeed and sometimes help provide them with the necessities.

In my STEM class, I use many hands-on activities to inspire them to try new things. The activities incorporate reading, math, and real-world challenges and situations to help them better understand why they need to learn these skills. My students must have strong reading, math, and technology skills to prepare them for the future.

I would like to have Makey Makey Kits for my STEM class. You can take everyday objects and turn them into a touchpad that interacts with many computer programs. My students will use these kits to explore conductivity, electronics, and circuitry as they expand their math and problem-solving skills. This will also connect with the new Oklahoma Academic Standards for Computer Science that will be required next school year.

Through this project, I hope to instill in my students a love for technology and knowledge. It’s important for my students to understand the importance of their education and to be able to see how learning reading and math will influence their futures.
