My Students
Miami Beach may be known worldwide for glitz and glamour, but we're also just another municipality with the responsibility for police, fire, and education of its residents. Yes, residents! Miami Beach has many full-time residents, often hospitality workers and their children being first and second-generation immigrants.
Unfortunately, the glamour doesn't always reach the underfunded learning institutions, where teachers, like myself, welcome them into adulthood here in the USA.
Sixty percent of our students are in poverty, and 40% can speak English at their appropriate grade level. My school is a K-8, Title I public school, serving all local students here within a 2-mile radius in Miami Beach. While our students are earnest and full of potential, with the extra hurdles they have to climb, they need more resources to help articulate our education. This doesn't even account for the pandemic they are currently experiencing during their middle school years.
My Project
My school is a Title I School, right in the heart of South Beach! Despite the glitz and glamour, there is a wonderful community of families that live here, that our public school has served for near 100 years.
Almost 90% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and around 60% of our students' population qualify for the ESOL Program (English as a second language).
In other words, our community has plenty of challenges.
The goal of this project is to provide a safe and efficient classroom for our students, through the unique challenges of 2021-22.
Dove antibacterial lotion not only kills germs during the pandemic but combats chafing (after having to use regular sanitizer all day, their hands do dry/chap)
Phone charging stations are essential in classes now, as our students need batteries to access content and stay available in case of an emergency. It also provides on safe space so no one's phone gets lost!
I've also obtained a second monitor for my teacher's workstation, but do not have the cables needed to connect it to our older computers. That rounds out the list!
In conclusion, we have unique challenges along the way, but the benefit will always outweigh the cost when we're educating the future of our city and country. We are extremely grateful for your generosity in time and money, and look forward to a bright future! - Mr. Rothschild
