My Students

This year, I have been having a blast with my 25 first graders. Our classroom is filled with diverse learners who each bring something different to our learning. They have different interests, strengths, and ways of thinking.

In order to best support my students and honor their thinking, I want to make my math instruction to be student led.

I want my students to work with and learn from one another. I believe that by having the thoughts, ideas, and strategies of my students showcased that it will empower these learners.

Because each child learns a different way, there are several materials we will need to aid in our instruction. Please consider donating to our classroom to help us continue to grow as lovers of math!

My Project

This year, I have been focusing on how to improve my math instruction and best support my mathematicians. Throughout this year, I have attended several math conferences, observed other teachers, and read about best practices.

I want my math instruction to be student led and student-focused.

By doing this, I will take on the role of a facilitator and provide many opportunities for my students to learn from one another. This means that my students will discover and use the strategies that work best for them, and be exposed to different ways of thinking. I believe that this will help my students stay engaged, challenged, and continue to grow as mathematicians.

These materials will be critical to our math instruction. The bins that will be purchased will be at each table and include concrete materials to help students explore solutions to math problems. By having the bins at each table they will be easily accessible to students. The pencil cases will be used to hold individual writing materials. Each student will have one that contains a dry erase marker, eraser, highlighter, and anything else I think might be useful to help my students solve math equations. I also want to make sure that students have the opportunity to share the strategies that they use so we can all learn new strategies to find ones that work best for us! The large sticky notes and chart paper will be used to write down and draw the different strategies students use. These will be posted in our classroom for students to reference so they can use strategies from other students and the strategies that work best for them.
