My Students

I teach at an inner city school with students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our students are extremely kind and hardworking! They would benefit from your help. I want to give them opportunities and resources they need to be successful and inspired.

The state legislature has decreased our funding over the last few years and it has negatively impacted our ability to serve our students.

Our students are resilient and overcome adversity in all situations! They love to learn!

My Project

Mikhayla Hughes-Shaw is Miss Iowa 2018. Mikhayla's life is a powerful testament to overcoming obstacles including bullying, low-self esteem and even depression. Through it all, she has persevered. Through it all, Mikhayla always had hope. Mikhayla's presentation includes an icebreaker, engaging activities, a Q&A session, and a violin performance.

Mikayla's campaign, "How About H.O.P.E.", which stands for "helping others and providing encouragement" creates and sustains conversations surrounding mental health and suicide awareness.

During her school visit, Miss Iowa will teach our students about the five lessons of HOPE: love yourself, try something new, follow your dreams, speak out, and have confidence.
