Miss Hussey Has All the Books!

Help me give my students an amazing classroom library to engage with. Help me turn my high school students from non-readers ("Miss, I hate reading!") into little reading machines. You're my only hope!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There's nothing like the feeling of falling in love with a good story. That's a feeling that I would like to give my students who haven't been given the opportunity or space to explore what they like to read. I can't be the only one in the classroom who is obsessed with reading.

I work at a Title 1 school that has an award-winning Inclusion program.

Our program wonderfully integrated Special Education students into the General Education classroom. The students at my school are special and are full of potential that just needs to be unlocked. Research has proven that reading fiction has numerous benefits. It makes people more empathetic, lowers stress levels, stimulates different parts of the brain, expands vocabulary, and helps people get a good night's sleep. I would like to turn all my non-readers into little reading machines.

My Project

I'd like to create a reading workshop with my students next year. To do that, I'll need a diverse classroom library. Diverse not only its authors and main characters, but in genre and reading levels. It's my goal to take my students who tell me they "hate reading" and turn them into obsessive readers.

Students love stories (ask them about their most recent trip to the movies or Netflix binge and you'll see what I mean).

However, they haven't had the opportunity or become accustomed to stretching their imagination by engaging with stories through books.
