Misbehaving Students Need Interesting Things To Read, Too!!!

My students need a class set of Romeo and Juliet; and West Side Story.

Students who misbehave should not be punished academically as well. I teach 7-12 grade English at an alternative school for students with behavior problems in a very rural, poverty stricken area. This is the first year my district's alternative school is open, so everything we do is a work in progress!

The odds were stacked against us with my school opening this year! The entire country is in a budget crunch, and my school is no different. We opened a brand new school with a very minimal budget -- meaning we got only the essentials! Our textbooks and other reading materials are all hand-me-downs, and they were handed down by their original owners for a reason.

Students who chronically misbehave in a traditional school setting generally have plenty of academic issues as well. As an English teacher, my goal is to help my students enjoy reading as much as possible. This is where you get the opportunity to help me! If I can work to replace my students' old, boring literature books with more interesting reading material such as "West Side Story", then everybody benefits!

By helping to provide a class set of "West Side Story", you will be providing reading material my alternative school students can relate to and enjoy, helping to foster within them a sense of self-worth from becoming a more fluent, capable reader.
