Mirrors for My Students: One Novel at a Time

Help me give my students equitable access to new, highly-esteemed and pulitzer prize winning books, which contain characters and individuals whom my students can identify with and see as a mirror into their own lives.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students who attend our school are a mixture of different economic and cultural backgrounds. We are a Title I school with over 75% entitled to free lunch. I have over 60 ESL students and many students with IEPs who challenge themselves every day to achieve beyond the expectations of their socio-economic backgrounds. Our school also has a large population of students whose families are either undocumented or are new to this country through the Lottery Visa program.

These students work hard and have proven to take pride and ownership of their work.

My Project

After attending a Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle PD, I became more cognizant of the fact that if students are not reading with us, they are not reading without us. It is salient that students not only pick up a book, but are genuinely interested in the subject of the book. More importantly, I want my students to read stories, both fiction and non-fiction, featuring characters and individuals who look like them.

One reason students in my school do not read as much as they should is because they cannot relate to the characters and individuals in the novels.

This project is designed to bridge the gap between the lack of representation in my classroom library so students can read about their own races and ethnicities.

Indeed there are many ways to identify with a novel; however, I want to give my students access to books that give them hope and ultimately encourage them to pick up another book.

My students and I thank you in advance for any contribution made to this project.
