Mirrors And Windows

My students need graph novels such as "Batman and Game of Thrones" to become engaged with reading and finding something they can connect to is the opening needed to help them become life-long learners.

My Students

Have you ever found a book that you were able to so completely immerse yourself in that a new world was created for you? My students have not discovered that world and I want to help them find that passion for reading.

"Struggling" is the label my students have been given because they have been held back one or more times.

"Engaged" and "Passionate" is what I want them to be seen as. My students are late bloomers; they are overage and under-credited for high school students. They struggle academically and have a difficult time getting engaged in their own education. My school is designed to help them become engaged and find that spark that no one else has seen in them and help them find the self-confidence they need to help them succeed in life.

My Project

To get struggling students engaged they need to connect to what they are doing but be challenged at the same time- this is the idea of the mirror. I am requesting graphic novels to help my students become engaged in reading. One of the biggest problems my students face is they cannot visualize what they are reading, and graphic novels are the first step to help them connect reading to engagement. Students will read these during their independent reading while working on other skills during class readings. Through practice as a class and independent reading, the goal is to use the graphic novels as the first rung on the step to becoming independent readers, writers, thinkers, and members of society. This is the mirror that will guide them to the open window to the world outside.

My students need a spark, not more drilling of the same old routine.

They need to see and experience a class that incorporates things they are interested in to motivate them to try new things and explore new ideas. My students need to see that they are a part of their own learning experience and that they are the integral part of the classroom. Having choices in what they want to read during independent reading demonstrates they have options; not just in reading but in their lives.
