Mirrors and Windows: Texts That Celebrate Students

My students need relatable and engaging books in order to see themselves in the lives of the protagonists!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In many urban communities, students are not supplied with the same tools and materials found in more affluent areas. My students are growing to be lifelong learners, and they are in need of resources to help them develop and strengthen their understanding of current events.

My fifth graders are bright, loving, and most importantly - unstoppable in their quest to be successful.

Their families support the students, the teacher, and the school. The parents are confident in my abilities as a teacher and with these new relationships and community connections. I enter my room more prepared and driven to provide my students with the supplies which they need.

My Project

The books I have requested will provide my students with a reading experience they can relate to. Finding books to serve as "mirrors" for my students means they will dive into protagonists' lives that mirror what they may see in their own lives. These books will also serve as "windows" where students can learn understanding and empathy by taking the perspectives of others. These texts will challenge and engage them, exercising literacy, comprehension, and creative thinking. My students will be able to each borrow their own book to read and complete assignments in and out of the classroom, returning them to borrow a new book and grow with each story. The wide selection will allow an exploration of different themes and writing styles, allowing many opportunities to be inspired and pursue a love of reading. Your generous donations to our project will influence the lives of my students. With your support and contribution, my students will be able to manage their own learning. They will begin to successfully and confidently navigate the rigorous curriculum. They will be able to focus on understanding content and concepts rather than the laborious action of decoding text.
