Mirrors and Windows #2: Books to Reflect My Diverse Students
Help me give my students books that can serve as MIRRORS (reflecting back their culture, values, and experiences) or WINDOWS (empathetic glimpses into another's world).

My Students
My students are resilient, kind, young adults at a Title I school. Many of them struggled immensely last year during distance learning. The struggle continues this year as we try to build back some of the academic stamina and social-emotional skills that students need to feel confident, safe, and supported at school.
Our students have been out of the practice of reading for pleasure for some time, and it is crucial to provide them with reading opportunities that excite them and reflect their varied interests and backgrounds.
It is my hope that providing them with more independent reading choices and new, exciting young adult titles will rekindle the joy to be found in reading.
My Project
My students are loving their independent reading time where they get both class time and time at home to dive into a book of their choosing. This project would help add to my classroom library collection and offer more diversity in the books accessible to them.
We talk all the time in my classroom about books being either MIRRORS or WINDOWS; they can either reflect back on our own experiences, or they can provide us with a glimpse into a very different life than the one we live; my students need more of both in their lives in order to spark their love of reading and to progress their reading stamina and skills.
Bringing more contemporary titles into my classroom library is a way to show my students that I see them, that I value their identities, and that I'm committed to making them, lifelong readers.
