My students need 30 tabletop mirrors in order to draw accurate self-portraits during art class.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Looney's classroom raised $349
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students in art love to draw portraits, and there's no better subject than themselves to draw! Unfortunately, we have no mirrors in the art room that they can use to closely examine their face and draw from observation.
My students attend an urban, inner city school in Connecticut.
The majority qualify for free and reduced lunch. In order for my students to have a well-rounded education, the arts are an integral part. By practicing visual art, it has been shown that students can improve concentration and focus in other academic areas. Students who often struggle with other aspects of school find a refuge in making and creating art.
My Project
Students who draw from observation will hone their hand-eye coordination while learning about proper facial proportion. They will be able to draw front and side (profile) views of the face and work on a three-quarter view, which is near to impossible to learn without looking in a mirror.
Students who draw their self portrait by looking in a mirror are more adept at observing details and they will be able to use what they have learned in previous classes about line, shape and form to draw more accurately.
When success is achieved, students' self-worth is elevated and they are filled with pride. I would love to help provide that sense of pride through the production of self-portraits.
