Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is an outspoken group of high achievers, exceptional athletes, struggling learners, and a few low attendees. With such a mix of learning styles and academic needs, it's important that I incorporate creativity and hands-on learning into the classroom.
Math and science are learned socially with students working in groups or pairs so they can have peer discussions and problem-solve together.
I've discovered that kinesthetic activities are the best way to teach math and science because they inherently provide motivation and inspiration for learning challenging content.
My Project
My students are 9th graders who are struggling to learn math. Many are special education students who have just this year moved into an inclusion classroom. They are navigating through so many obstacles - transitioning from special education to "regular" education classes, a pandemic, balancing 6 subjects in their first year of high school, and of course, the ups and downs of being a teenager.
In order to create an engaging math environment, students with special needs require manipulatives to explore and experience math concepts.
Math tools like Zoobs, Playstix, Magnetic and Soft Blocks, and the See Solve Math Center enable the students to learn number sense, probability, geometry, and even engineering practices.
