My Project
These materials will help my students simulate the process of mining for minerals. Students will use topographic maps and wax landform casts to analyze sediment readings and take core samples to locate potential mineral deposits. The wax, wax melter, wooden stir sticks, lab scales, clay, and crayons will be used to create their wax landform casts. Vegetable oil will be used to help ease the release of the wax from the molds. Their landforms will be placed on the trays for efficiency and easy of clean-up.
This hands-on activity will engage my students in learning about mining and its effects on the environment.
Students will have to determine the most economical and environmentally sound methods for extracting the ore. Student teams will follow their mining plan and track their expenditures and profit. They will reflect on how they might increase their profits and/or lessen the environmental impact of their mining operation. This activity will increase their scientific knowledge and skills as well as their financial literacy.
