Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a food director here in Milwaukee that works at a UWM Charter School program, where our kids prepare themselves to go to post secondary school. We have an excellent graduation rate of 98% and the amount of scholarships they get is outstanding. But over the years when I talk to my graduated students I hear so many talk about how certain areas of college life they were not prepared for. For example, no kitchens in their dorms and no money for real substantial food.
I am creating a cooking club here at Veritas High School so I can teach them some healthy, easy and budget friendly meals.
Most dorm rooms only allow like microwaves, small fridges and maybe a hot pot or air fryer. But since high schools no longer have traditional home economics, I want to teach them some of my skills.
I have asked for electric griddles, hot plates, an electric oven and some basic kitchen utensils. I want to teach the kids some fun college dorm cooking, throw in some Tik Tok recipes, and of course teach them to be healthy and saving money.
