My Project

Our Michigan rural school contains just over 900 young five to 2nd-grade students. We have many students who are at-risk for a variety of reasons. We use Mountie Proud Tickets (part of our school-wide PBIS initiative) within our school as a way to promote being Safe, Respectful and Responsible in our students.

The focus of our school is to make sure all students are successful in all areas: social, emotional and academics.

In order to support this focus, we have to look outside of the box as many of our students have needs that are not able to be met in traditional ways.

We have students who are eager to learn, happy to participate and willing to go the extra step, but sometimes have emotional needs that need to be addressed by engaging in sensory activities to help them regulate to get back to the ability to be able to learn in the academic environment.

My students need a variety of sensory tools to help with their sensory needs in order to focus, adapt and complete their academic work. We have many students who have special needs (highly active, unfocused, sensory overloaded and/or may learn to play) that are outside of the special education realm and would benefit from supplies that will help them stay focused and can give them brain breaks using weighted materials to refocus them. Using fidget items to get the extra movements they need, will help adapt their bodies so they are ready to go back to the general education classroom and complete their school work.

These students have the ability to complete their academic work but need many breaks to regain their composure to finish their academic work and maintain their social-emotional skills with their peers as well.
