My students need 9 handheld microscopes that can connect to laptops to conduct group science experiments involving observations of macroscopic objects during Forensics.
Edward Teller said, "The science of today is the technology of tomorrow."
My students are 6th and 7th graders who are excited about STEM!
Our school is a NYC Title I public school in Brooklyn and we are in our second academic year. This is the first year we are offering a Forensics Crew, where students will apply science and math concepts as they practice forensics techniques to solve mini mysteries. When I think of my students I smile because then are tenacious and eager to "do" science and engineering. They want to learn as long as we (teachers) keep it fun. That's why I need your help!
My Project
The students are already buzzing with excitement about the fingerprinting and the hair analysis; the issue comes about when these macroscopic, rather opaque objects cannot be placed under a compound light microscope for enlargement and analyzation. It is difficult to see minutia patterns, no matter how old or young you are! In addition, the nine new handheld microscopes have the benefit of being able to plug into the school's laptops, so when students work in groups, the image will be enlarged even more, permitting more students to have discuss the importance of what is being seen. Snapshots can be taken so that groups could compare results as a closing activity.
Incorporating students' interests in hands-on learning, has demonstrated to be an effective way to help disadvantaged students build foundational skills and achieve academically.
Building on students love of technology will develop academic skills and prepare them for success. Please help!
