Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in a Spanish-English dual language program in an urban neighborhood. They come from many different cultures and languages and arrive full of enthusiasm to learn. Some of them speak Spanish at home and some speak English (or another language). I teach literacy and Science/Social Studies to all 44 students in Spanish.

Our very diverse public school is large, and the vast majority our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

Over 65% of our class is comprised of English language learners, including students who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Tongan, Somali and a handful of other languages. Most of our students have not attended preschool. Together, we have built a dynamic, child-centered environment with high expectations for all children.

My Project

Last year, a family at school donated a used plastic dollhouse that broke within a few weeks of use. The persistence students had in using the broken dollhouse every day for the rest of the year during play time indicated how essential this fixture is to our dramatic play area! We cannot use the broken dollhouse again, and I would love to purchase a high-quality large wooden dollhouse with furniture for them that will withstand daily play for years.

By using this set of dolls representing families from different cultures, students will be able to see themselves and each other in their dramatic play.

That representation in the classroom can go a long way toward helping a student feel validated, visible and loved for who they are as a cultural being.

In Kindergarten, we aim to provide 30-60 minutes per day of play time, because students at this age learn so much better through self-directed play. Having a wide variety of materials for them to engage with through play provides support for their unbridled creativity! Because our school is also dual language, students are trying out two languages when playing with their peers. Having familiar objects such as a doll house and family dolls will help them teach each other essential vocabulary in both languages.
