This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A successful public school Mariachi program provides quality instruments, materials, instructors, and performance/learning opportunities for its students. The budget for my elementary school program, however, only provides for my salary and not for the materials needed to facilitate its expansion.

My students are bilingual low-income second or third-generation Hispanic children ages 3-11.

The school has hired me to offer different classes for violin, guitar and guitarrón(the Mariachi bass guitar), and general music/voice. I have a group of 10 that has been practicing and performing Mariachi music for two years. They are very talented, enthusiastic, and well behaved. However, I know there would be dozens more students if there were instruments available for all of them to use.

My Project

Students must currently purchase their own instrument because the school does not yet own a set. I would like to make it possible for any student in the school to join and be able to pick any Mariachi instrument they wish to play regardless of its cost. Currently I am asking for four trumpets, since they are $100 each and I have anxious students ready to learn how to play them.

This project is important because every child deserves the opportunity to experience and express themselves creatively with music.

The mariachi movement in American schools has produced only amazingly positive results, and this project will help my students reap the same benefits. Students learn discipline, confidence, and self-made success/appreciation, but in this particular musical tradition students also improve their lives by bridging cultural, linguistic, and social/generational gaps.
