Help me give my students manipulatives to use as we sort and describe objects to improve vocabulary, explore sounds in words to help with reading, and practice articulating sounds correctly for clear speech!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students work hard when they come to my room to work on their speech and language skills. They have a smile on their face when I come to the door, they are excited to talk on the way down the hall, and they show good effort with our tasks.
Some of the students struggle to be understood in the classroom, the lunchroom, on the playground, and may even be teased sometimes.
But my room is a safe place where they know they can be understood and they can work to improve their speech.
Some of my students struggle with listening & reading comprehension, following directions, vocabulary (categories, attributes, synonyms, antonyms), or grammar, which impacts their academic progress in the classroom. But in my room, they are able to practice skills and learn strategies to improve their academics.
These students have to work harder than the average student, but they are motivated and diligent!
Having manipulatives available during our speech/ language therapy sessions helps to engage the kids-- they get excited about the tiny objects! Kids who are excited and engaged in learning make better progress.
I have selected the Alphabet Tubs from Lakeshore Learning because there is a good variety of objects as well as speech sounds represented.
And because these miniature items represent common words from the classroom and home, they promote use of the skills we are practicing in other settings!
These objects can be used in so many ways (categories, attributes, vocabulary, following directions, phonemic awareness, sentence formation, speech sound production)-- they will make a big difference in my lessons and my kids' progress with their speech and language skills!
