Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a group of diverse, middle school, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. We are at a Title One school. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background. I strive to have my classroom accessible and equitable, but that becomes a challenge when resources are limited.

My students are current and future scientists who are excited to learn about the world around them through curiosity, observation, data collection, and application.

My students are all eager to learn and make self-discoveries in science. They come to school knowing that it's a safe place where they can create meaningful connections with their peers and teachers. They come with little to no background knowledge of the science content, but they are willing and strive to soak up all the knowledge that is presented to them. My students are wonderful young men and women who are ready to take on the world.

My Project

Science involves the use of food items in many experiments. It requires keeping items chilled, cooled, or hot.

Students need a mini fridge for science experiments to help them visualize and master concepts as well as to keep food and other science specimens cool.

There are many experiments and projects that we have done that require prep work the day before. Many times, obtaining these materials are not feasible without proper timing, such as bringing in ice for a lab that will last the entire day without melting so that the last period of the day can still complete the lab.

For instance, in 6th grade, students learn about the convection cycle. They are introduced to the convection in liquids as a mechanism for energy transfer. They observe the interaction of colored water of different temperatures to determine that warm water rises and cold water descends. Students also observe a model convection chamber to conclude that warm air masses move upward and cool air masses sink. In order to do these experiments, we need the necessary equipment to create a freezing environment (using ice) and a high temperature environment (boiling water) to visualize sinking and rising air or liquid.

In addition, 7th graders work on a chemistry unit that requires a lot of freezing items and boiling water (as they learn about kinetic energy and energy transfer). In having a mini freezer and electric kettle, we would have the necessary materials for students to use throughout the day.
