As a teacher of eighth grade mathematics at an inner-city school, I have three academic levels of learners; Algebra I students are high achievers, Pre-Algebra students are extending skills, and the EXP class (an all-male class) where students are building basic skills and becoming aware of Algebra concepts. Over the summer, I attended a workshop on Lego Mindstorm Robotics. I was impressed at the way the students took to the various tasks and knew it would be a wonderful learning tool in my classroom. I want to incorporate Mindstorms into the weekly lesson. I hope to have Friday as MINDSTORM DAY! Students from all classes (approx. 75) will be involved in planning/design, computer programing, and hands-on construction of a robot; however the initial training group will consist of approx. 30 students. Students will work in teams and hold inter-school competitions to see which team designed the best robot for a specific job or function. This would be an extending lesson for the higher students (Academically Gifted), a programming lesson (computer based) for the Pre-Algebra students, and a motivational as well as team building exercise for the students who often struggle with mathematics (EXP class). The hands-on approach will be grouped with the higher thinking skills and team members will benefit from sharing knowledge as they learn together. From the individual classes I will organize a team who will continue the competition at a higher level, matching their skills with students from other schools. Through this motivational tool, students will find a challenging and enjoyable way to excel in mathematics. Recognition for their accomplishments will be given through this lesson, which will build pride in student work.
