Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school make up currently has 534 students enrolled. There are 2.38% Asian, 6.59% Black, 69.05%Hispanic, 0.18% Indian, 6.23%Multi, and 15.57% White students. Of our students 85% are on free or reduced lunch. We serve students with a range of learning degrees including various levels of English Language Learners (i.e. monolingual, bilingual) gifted, autism spectrum, specific learning disabilities, emotional behavioral disturbance, and hearing & visual impaired. With so many various learners in one school, it looks like the cards are stacked against us. However, that is the furthest from the truth. Our faculty is strong, our mission is clear. We want to "...provide opportunities for personal growth and academic success for all students." Every day my students are encouraged to believe in themselves and their ability to be great future leaders of the world.

My Project

Learning in my classroom is not just about academics. Learning is social and mindful. Confidence in our own abilities is needed in order to be success. As adults we know it takes perseverance to achieve our goals; no matter how. If or small. It is my true belief that motivation and confidence comes from within. As a facilitator of learning it is my responsibility to teach the whole student.

Thus why student's learning should be wholistic.

In order for students to be academically successful in the classroom they must learn to focus on the moment, their inner voice and get in touch with their own feelings. Each day students will use their yoga mats to engage in "Quiet Time" activities. During this time, they will learn how to control their thoughts, fears and anxieties. They will focus on various breathing techniques and strategies

They can use to calm their brain when they feel stressed out, afraid. But it will also help those students who have a million different thoughts going on in their brain and how to focus, mindfully on the now. With those mindful practices students will be better able to focus on mathematics.

I've taken mindful courses and read extensive articles on the benefits of mindful learning. But the true research was when I implemented on a smaller scale this concept of the wholistic student. Providing the yoga mats and math games will greatly help my students be better mathematicians but most importantly people.
