This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I try to give them every possible type of leverage they can get. They are a diverse group of children with many abilities, yet they don't always have the materials they need to be successful.

With an intense will to succeed, they need to be challenged.

It is important to provide my students with materials that any other student, in an other school district, would have access to.

My Project

The City of Ember will help my students see the positives and negatives of a seemingly perfect world. The novel displays a seemingly Utopian society that is revealed to be dystopian. Students enjoy discussing the alternate view of society and making comparisons to the world around them.

The story will help them to visualize how people must work toward their goals and aspirations because they are not just given to them.

The novel challenges students to think about equality, justice, and isolation. Critical thinking skills are improved as students explore the complexities of the novel and make inferences and comparisons between the real world, the novel, and film adaptations of the text.
