My students are in grades 3-5 and have a variety of different needs. They all receive social skills instruction on a daily basis as part of the program they are in. It is my responsibility, as their Autistic Support Teacher, to utilize a variety of resources to instruct them in this area. I have recently found a variety of books that teach about mindfulness and different breathing techniques that students can use to calm down.
These books will teach my students a variety of strategies that allow them to manage their anger, frustration, and various other emotions that can out of hand in our classroom.
My Project
These resources including picture books, activity cards, and breathing books will allow my students to learn a variety of ways to not only practice mindfulness but will assist them with calming down during stressful situations. My students currently use two kinds of breathing; these picture books have even more engaging ways to teach students that I am confident they will utilize in and out of my classroom (which is always our goal).
I am excited to use these resources to encourage and teach my students socially acceptable ways to not only calm themselves down but also to let those around them know they are having a hard time and may need some assistance.
