Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students are full of energy, but they also love to curl up with a good book. Many of them come from impoverished backgrounds where books at home are scarce, and many of them come from Spanish-speaking families where they do not get sufficient language practice in English.
As a result, many of my students come to me lacking foundational reading skills.
My hope is to bridge this gap and foster a love for learning in a welcoming, literature-rich classroom environment.
My Project
Many of my students come from broken homes, foster care, or have other traumatic histories that affect their day to day lives. I have already started the school year with daily breathing exercises and we have quiet meditation time after lunch.
This collection of mindfulness books and CD's will allow me to incorporate daily self-care into my curriculum to help students cope with stress and overwhelming emotions that can distract them from learning.
I explain to my students that mindfulness practice builds their "focus muscles" so they can concentrate for longer periods of time. This ability to calm themselves and focus on the present will then translate into their ability to work independently on academic tasks
