My Project

Legos provide students with hands on opportunities to problem solve, be creative, and follow directions. Legos can be used in connection with all areas of the curriculum.

For example, students will be practicing their reading and writing skills by following the directions in the lego books to build different sets.

Students can then create their own design. They can write step by step directions for their peers to create the same design. In Math students can use their knowledge of 3D and 2D shape attributes to build composite shapes. Students can also use the legos as manipulatives to assist them in solving addition and subtraction problems.

Several of the sets match different units taught in Science and Social Studies. Students can use the sets as centers to build different animals, plants, and transportation. Students will use their STEM skills (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to create different designs.

Legos can also be used with our social emotional learning. Legos provide students a quiet moment to reset and regulate their emotions. Legos can also be used as rewards. For example, when students complete an assignment or reach a goal they will earn lego time. There will be times when the lego sets will frustrate students. Students will be able to use the coping skills we have learned throughout the year for when they are frustrated. Instead of immediately giving up students will be encouraged to take deep breaths, reread directions, ask a peer for help, and know when they need to take a break and come back to it.

The legos can also be used to instill a classroom community. Students may work together to create different designs. They can incorporate mini competitions. Legos can also be used during indoor recess. There are numerous opportunities legos will provide my students.
