This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are 9th-12th graders in Long Beach, CA. The students I work with have diverse strengths, learning styles, and needs. They also come from many different economic backgrounds.
All of my students are working hard to graduate high school with a diploma and attend college, but they need a little support to help them achieve their goals.
Many of my students will be first-generation college students who are feeling very hopeful, but anxious, about their futures. Journaling is an excellent way to practice self-awareness and self-regulation, giving our students a way to express themselves and process their thoughts and emotions. Having sensory support in our classroom to help them manage their stress and anxiety is essential for their future success. My students are practicing and developing self-regulation skills, and having supplies such as headphones, fidget toys, and other sensory manipulatives, as well as healthy snacks and sweet treats, and something to drink, provides a way for them to see which supports work best for them as they continue to practice healthy coping mechanism and mindfulness to improve their mental health as they get ready to transition out of high school.
