Help me give my students a calming area full of sensory supports for them to take a break in that helps them de-escalate and promote safe behavior.

My Project

I am a Behavior Specialist at a Charter School for students with Autism and other disabilities. I want to create a Mindfulness Room that any student school wide can utilize to take a break in when feeling big or intense emotions. The Mindfulness room that is a pull out break area full of sensory supports designed to help students de-escalate and promote safe behaviors. It features soft, ambient lighting that creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, comfortable seating options, like bean bags and couch, provide cozy spots for relaxation. As well as calming sounds, such as gentle music or nature sounds, play softly in the background, enhancing the peaceful environment.

The Mindfulness Room provides health coping strategies for our students in need while provided a safe and calm area to take a break.

In one corner, there’s a small area with mindfulness tools, such as fidget toys, stuffed animals, Legos, and STEM tools. Is is also decorated with a nature tapestry and soft lighting to support students in calming down.

The Mindfulness Room is designed with flexibility and student needs in mind. With this thoughtfully curated environment, students can take a step back from stress. The Mindfulness Room serves as a refuge where students can take a moment to regroup, fostering a culture of safety and emotional well-being.

Often school staff will use the Mindfulness Room as a post crisis processing break room to talk with students about their unsafe choices while addressing their needs and next steps to get back on track for their success and academic learning.
