Mindfulness & Relaxation for 5th Graders in Hawaii!

My students need glitter, glue, jars, and Borax to build Glitter Jars and Glitter slime for practicing mindfulness and relaxation.

My Students

My scholars are lively group of 5th graders that live in a rural community in Hawaii. Students living in these areas often have limited resources and experiences that are usually available students their age living in the United States.

Many of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources available to them for enrichment and enjoyment outside of school.

These scholars amaze me each day when they are focused on what they are learning, when they are engaged in the lessons, and when they are excited about what they will learn about next.

My Project

Recent studies have found that 40 percent of elementary students worry too much. Many say that stress is an avoidable part of life, however, students must learn proper coping techniques to handle new situations and build resilience. In this project, we will practice mindfulness by creating their own Glitter Jars to use after lunch each day.

New research shows mindfulness can improve the mental, emotional, social and physical health and wellbeing of young people.

Too often in school we are in a rush to activity after activity. It's my goal with this project to teach my scholars about mindfulness, setting aside time each day after lunch to focus on our wellbeing. We will begin our mindfulness practice with a lesson making the Glitter Jars. Glitter Jars use glue, water and glitter. When the clear glue and water is mixed together, it becomes thicker, making the glitter fall slowly to the bottom. We will be using a Glitter Jar as a visual aid to slow down and focus on our breathing. We will use the Glitter Jar in our classroom every day to calm down after recess and practice Mindfulness. After a few weeks, we will be making glitter slime. This is a great tactile tool to help students focus their energy and relax. This tool will be used similarly to a stress ball, and students will have the opportunity to use it throughout the day. With the Glitter Slime, students will have a tactile sensory tool to focus their energy and de-stress. For students that have difficulty processing their emotions, these tools will invaluable additions to our classroom.
